Bernardi Dance School Red Cross Topeka Fundraiser

This last saturday 6/25/2011 the Beverly Bernardi Conservatory of Dance located at 5938 SW 17th St. (just off of 17th & Wanamaker) here in Topeka held a fundraiser for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The event was held from 12-3 and over $500 was raised from passers by that generously gave to the cause. The money will go towards the Reading, KS and Joplin, MO. Am. Red Cross Disaster efforts.

It was a lot of fun watching the work that the kids and adults did to raise funds. Some of the participants dressed up in their performance costumes while others opted to use some of Ms. Bernardi’s extensive selection of storybook character outfits. One of the things that really helped raise money was the generosity of Cici’s Pizza here in Topeka that donated 50 free meals. Donors that donated a minimum of $5 to the Red Cross received a free Cici’s Pizza Buffet coupon for as long as the coupons lasted. Everyone that donated anything recieved a cookie or muffin courtesy of Perkins. (Pretty good deal, huh?)

The encouraging thing about the whole event was that by a few people donating a couple of hours of their Saturday afternoon to raise some money and the gracious generosity of the citizens of Topeka it showed what can be accomplished to help people that have experienced a tragic event in their lives. I hope that other groups get the same idea and they too can see what can be done.

If you are wanting to have a fund raiser for the American Red Cross call the Topeka chapter at 785-354-9239. They will arrange for Red Cross volunteers to come and give support, supply the collection buckets and hang up a sign.

Topeka St. Patrick’s Day 2011

One of the great things about living in Topeka is that the city is big enough to have many of the conveniences of a bigger city but when there is an event like a parade you find yourself running into many people you know!

Great Spaces Music & Art Series – Topeka

The Great Spaces Music & Art Series sponsored by Grace Episcopal Cathedral Topeka Kansas has been bringing cultural events to Topeka for several years now. On Monday Jan. 31st they hosted the St. Olaf Choir. Despite a heavy snowfall that day the event was extremely well attended. Two of the members of the St. Olaf choir are also members of Grace Cathedral and are attending St. Olaf College in Minnesota.

The next event in the series will be held this Friday evening when the Washburn Percussion Collective (Everything but drums) will perform at 7pm. Tickets are $10/each and at this time are still available. Contact Steve Burk at Grace Episcopal Cathedral Topeka (785) 235-3457 for more information.

2011 Polar Plunge – Special Olympics Benefit

When I arrived at the Lake Shawnee swimming beach this sunny January morning the sound of chain saws could be clearly heard. These chain saws were being operated by men in orange dry suits, members of the water rescue team. It was a fairly pleasant mid 40′s day for the 7th Annual Polar Plunge, a benefit for Special Olympics. The benefit reportedly raised over $95,000 for Special Olympics according to WIBW TV news. The atmosphere was defiantly festive! The 5K run and walk started at 11am and “The Plunge” at 12 Noon. The run was fun but “The Plunge” was decidedly the main event!
Right at high noon the “Plunge” began. The water rescue team in full force making sure that no one slide under the ~2inch thick ice or succumb to hypothermia before making it out of the water and back to the gender appropriate changing tents. There were bikinis, formal dresses complete with high heels, batman and many teams in their companies tee shirts. With water splashing and guys trying to dunk each other fun was had all around!

Tom Roberts plays Linus and Lucy

Over the years it has become a family tradition to travel to Kansas City to see the lights on the Country Club Plaza, to do some Christmas shopping and to be a part of the “big city” hub bub. One of the highlights each year is getting to see Tom Roberts play Linus and Lucy by Vince Guaraldi at Crown Center. Everyone has heard the song and seen the, now classic, Peanut’s Christmas special. The thing most people don’t realize is how hard of a piece it is to play. I’m not a pianist but I have been told it’s a tough piece to play. You will see in the video that Mr. Roberts states that it took him two years to learn it. As I understand it, in order to play Linus and Lucy the right hand and the left have to play two separate tunes. I requested Mr. Roberts play the piece right after the flash mob had finished their Hallelujah Chorus piece so there were quite a few people still in the area which contributed to an even noisier than usual atmosphere to try and get this recorded. I think though that the music comes through very well.
